Hello racefans!

Well, so ends my 24-hour stint on Gaydar.com.au. Yes, for reasons unbeknownst to even me, I decided to sign up again with a new profile. I think it was mainly procrastination techniques, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek fun with the boy.

In that 24 hours, I recieved 15 messages, 267 profile hits, and numerous offers of sex. I have to say, I had great fun teasing the “hey ur cute wanna shag” dimwits. Vanity, thy name is Gus.
Got bored of it though, proved my point to the boy, so the profile is gone. *sighs* oh well!!

As people might have gathered from last night’s post… things are just very stressful around here. Both Adam and myself are lacking sleep, feeling yukky, stressed out with uni, in tight financial situations, those kind of things. It will be over soon.. it’s just this time of year methinks.

Am really looking forward to tonight and the free tix to Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. I’ve heard mixed reviews, and I have to say I don’t give a shit. I go because I love the music of John Williams, and I think Hayden Christiansen is a hottie, even though he can’t act.

Here is a garfield comic for today… I only recently found the feed… I used to love Garfield so much as a kid. Mmmm… lasagna….

yes, John Williams does have a good song, doesn’t he?

I’ve got a greatest hits double-cd of his – about 30 different version of his song!

It’s very disorienting though – you go away, come back to find yoursself in the middle of the cd, and can’t for the life of you tell which track is playing just by listening..

  Whilst his genre is the same, I think he is perhaps responsible for producing so many well-known tunes, and his ability to quickly whip up a 100-instrument orchestral work for numerous film scores is without competition.

    Yep, same composer.. unless you’ve gone and confused him with John
    Williams…
    
    There’s a reason he can whip up a 100-instrument orchestral work so easily – he has a template/recipe/algorithm/call-it-what-you-will.
    
    Lots of fanfares from the brass
    Lots of fiddly bits from the flutes
    Lots of trademark strummy bits from the strings
    
    Listen to a few of his themese together and you’ll see what I mean. One example: the start of the “Spiderman” main theme is a slower, less brassy, more crescended version of the first few bars of the “Star Wars” main theme. Listen to the section of the Superman theme betweeon roughly the 30th and 45th second and tell me it doesn’t sound like it’s lifted straight from an Indiana Jones theme. Ditto the part from 1:15-1:30. Listen to his great “Olympic Fanfare and Theme”…
    
    This is not to say that he doesn’t write great music; he does, it’s utterly fantastic. It’s just that the main reason he’s so prolific and able to do what he does is that his work isn’t very original – he has a few stock techniques which he essentially overlays with a new fanfare for each new work – “dah dah-duh dah-dah” for spiderman “duh-duh-duh dah dah, duh-duh-duh dah dah” for star wars.
    
    I’m also not meaning to imply that GW is in any way unique; go compare Tchiakovsky’s “Slave Marche” with the more famous, later, “1812 Overture” and you’ll find overlap. Strains of Copeland’s masterwork “Appalachian Spring” can be heard in some of his other work.
    
    The thing that makes GW unique is: other composers have borrowed bits and pieces from here and there; GW essentially has a Theme-Music-Factory for churning out new themes almost indistinguishable from the older themes

      Oh for sure he has templates, and much material is overlapped, but he would have to considering the amount of music he churns out.
      
      That being said, I can still argue that whilst similar, his music is unique enough to be identifying. Listening to the Star Wars soundtrack last night whilst watching the film, I was intruiged by the interplay of thematic material throughout the score, and indeed you could follow the plot just by listening to the themes: Anakin’s Theme morphing into the Imperial March, the Duel of the Fates in the scene with Yoda and the Emperor, Leia’s Theme at the end, etc etc I could go on.
      
      In any case, I still have to say I have the utmost respect for him. It’s fucking hard to write for a 100-piece orchestra effectively, with or without a template (I’ve actually tried believe it or not). I have so much more respect than listening to those pop-”idols”, whose songwriters write out the same chordal progression, same 3 instruments, slightly different tune, same whiny voice and timbre.
      
      Incidentally… whilst listening to the Village People’s “Go West” the other day (I have my gayboi moments), I noticed the chordal progression and key was identical to Pachabel’s Canon in D.

        just wouldn’t (normally) be one of the things I was really looking forward to in a movie – normally the dialog, plot, filmography etc would stand out more.
        
        But, we have george lucas in charge of this movie, so we can’t expect any of that..
        
        You can find traces of Pachelbel’s Canon everywhere.. it’s such a fantastic piece…

I know how it feels dude to be stuck in one of those ruts where everything seemes to be a bit of a drag and the cash flow is going far to well for everybody else.

I am pleased to hear that I am not the only John Williams fan out there. When I say fan I mean I listen to his music not that I am part of his fan club.

I must say that Jim Davis has a great perspective on the world and seems to describe the ideal lifestyle for me. Hence Garfield is plasted on my wall. Unfortunantly I live in a world that is probably better described by Scott Adams’ just as unique perspective. So Dilbert is now going to be making an apperance on my wall encroching on Garfield’s space.

    As for what’s wrong with it, Jim Davis has admitted that he created it to be deliberately mediocre, and lowest-common-denominator, so it doesn’t “Burn out” and oversaturate the market. That’s why the car-window toys were pulled from the shelves for years, and why it’s hardly ever funny. It’s just a money making venture to him.

      I admit that it has its ups and downs. I don’t think it is quite as astute as, say Dilbert, but that cat has been around for years and is still popular.

Is Adam as over the moon as I am about uni being over?

I swear, this session sent me to a near breakdown. I’m so glad it’s over. Four examinations, but hardly any stress for those. (All worth a great deal of the subject, but stress becomes failure).
