Hiya pplz!
Long time since updates, I know. This year is flying past at an alarming rate, and I can’t believe it’s spring already and I feel like going to the beach!
The news from up here is that Shelton is growing like a weed, getting a lot bigger, and a lot naughtier! He’s doing well… he responds to his name, will sit on command and is even toilet trained to a basic degree (not perfect yet though, unfortunately!). He may be naughty, but still so adorable!!! He still retains some of his puppy clumsiness, often getting over-excited and then running down the stairs and face-planting onto the deck. Doesn’t phaze him though… a shake of the head, wag of the tail and he’s forgotten all about it. Cuteness overload…

Well… thesis due date is getting closer and closer. 3.5 weeks until it’s due! If I haven’t mentioned what I’m doing, it’s a project to port Avaya‘s VoIP softphone into Vista. It’s been a lot of research and work so far, and in particular i’m concentrating on Quality of Service and IPv6. I’m now running Vista RC-1 on my laptop, and I have to say I’m relatively impressed that Micro$oft have picked up their game, because with Beta 2 I thought we would see Macs running the world! I decided to run Vista Longhorn Server Beta 2 on my server as a Virtual Server, and I’m glad I bought an extra gig of memory and 250GB HDD because most of it was in use by the virtual machine! I worked all night last night trying to get Active Directory working on Longhorn Server until I had a breakthrough at about 7am in the morning, when I made the new enterprise-level features of Vista work without actually running Longhorn Server at all!. That was definately cause for celebration, so I whipped out the Johnny Black and the Dunhill Whites and went out and talked to the puppy.

So, if you’re still reading after getting through that geeky bit, I’m impressed! < rant >I’m always amazed by the apathy of so many people when it comes to learning about technology. Sure, you might not have the passion of some or want to know it in implicit detail, but considering how technology-based our lives and workplaces are becoming, I think it’s very unwise to be completely ignorant of how these things basically work. Hence I often have very little time for those that expect the technologically-literate to just “fix things” without actually caring how it works. It’s the same with cars… I may not be a mechanic or be able to fix it myself, but I’m interested in how it all goes together and basically works. < /rant >
This year has been quite trying for me, and I have to say that the next 6 weeks are going to be some of the most difficult in my life in terms of how much i need to get done. Apart from the thesis, I also have major assignments for my Satellite Communications subject, and a full-time job to go to. And, of course, I have to console and keep Adam happy as he does his thesis, which is starting to get some good results! His survey managed to pull in 771 results (thanks to those that took part!) and he has seen some very interesting trends when it comes to the frequency that people download, and its impact. The television networks have been contacting him, and his lecturer wants to see it professionally published, so I’m very proud of him! Of course, that means that half the time he is stressed out and frustrated (as one gets with theses), and I think I’ll be doing well to get to the other side without being in a straightjacket.
I’d love to see everyone when this is all over, and I promise to put up some more puppy photos before he gets out of the cute stage!
Hope everyone is well and doing ok… Thankyou if you’ve read this far!
Gus

Someone commented that they had a new term for people like me — Twink + Geek = Tweek.
After reading the above, do you agree?? LOL
