Well, it’s the “new” TV… streaming media!

This is the introduction to his new zCast service. This is the kind of way he’s going to be doing all his high-profile interviews. Have a looksee :-)

I can’t embed non-YouTube here into LiveJournal, so the link is:

Don’t forget!

Not long ago, a young fellow named Nick left a comment on one of my posts, saying there was no need to start my own political party, as there was a perfectly good party that had just registered for the Federal Election. Turns out Nick is the Liberty and Democracy Party’s candidate for the Victorian seat of Deakin… good on him I say! I have said many times on this blog that I lament the Liberal Party’s departure from their founded ideals of classical Libertarianism, and I want to see a party in Australia that supports free trade, classical liberal economic policies, whilst also supporting a progressive social policy. The LDP claims to support all of that, so I decided to check it out.

It was interesting, to say the least. A quick look at the candidates show a good portion of them to be engineers or lawyers, and a majority of them appear to be target shooters. The kind of crowd a firearms-owning engineer would fit well into. I thought I would examine a few notes from their policies, maybe the readers of this blog could offer their ideas (I love discussion).

Nuclear Power

I like this one… LDP support nuclear power, which I think is essential to Australia’s growth. They aptly point out that nuclear safety has increased exponentially since the disasters of Chernobyl or Three Mile Island, and Australia is not short of space when it comes to storing waste product (which is volumetrically negligible). As they state… if Sweden can use and store their own, Australia has no excuses. And as the No.1 supplier of uranium worldwide, why not use the resources we already have. They support coal power for as long as it is economically viable and sustainable, but in my opinion nuclear power is the way to go.

Global Warming

Whether real or not, whether man-made or not, the pragmatist’s view remains, i.e. we really can’t do much about it… the deed is done. We don’t know enough about our climate history, and notable “experts” keep contradicting each other… if climate change is happening, we would be far better off preparing for different climate conditions and adapting than spending money on “green” industries whilst China builds a coal power-plant every 2 weeks. When it comes to global warming, my opinion is that we would be better off saving our water, and learning how to harvest more, as it’s going to become the new scarce resource.

Lifestyle-choices / Gay Marriage

One of the LDP’s main tag-lines goes along the line of “You can live and do whatever you want, as long as it doesn’t directly hurt others or their property”. As such, gay marriage is in, and the government has no right to morally police the populace. They state that marriage is not historically a religious thing, and definitely not originally Christian, so it is completely hypocritical to deny two loving people the chance not to officially wed like anyone else.

On the same stroke, one of the things I like is that they state that an individual must be responsible for their own choices… whether good or bad. It is not up to the Government to nanny a person and protect them from themselves… you do it, you live with it.

That’s the pros, now the cons:

State-based responsibility

It would appear that the LDP, in their drive towards a minimalist government, would have education and some other departments devolved almost completely to the state level, using governmental competition to drive an efficient outcome. Nice thought, but no. The state governments on the whole have no idea how to run a toaster, much less an economy or even worse the state’s education. Mismanagement, disparity between states and constant federal-state blame-shifting have gotten the education (and health) system to where it is now… In my opinion it’s time to ged rid of state governments, and enjoy the savings from not having that extra level of control.

Invididual Health

I’m sorry, but this stink like America. The LDP appear to far less government control in health, which whilst it would encourage efficiencies, would undoubtedly lead to an American-style health system where poor people die on the streets. Also, by relying on provider competition, we would see “low-cost” and “budget” health providers, which would see cartoon-like surgeons operating with a bedsheet and a rusty scalpel. Encouraging free economy is one thing, but regulation must exist somewhere because people will do anything for a dollar.

Gun Control

I’ve used firearms since I got my minor’s permit at 13, and owned my first rifle at 18. I balked at how insane the legislation is to own a firearm… I do anything wrong, store it incorrectly or even not fill out the right forms, it’s an instant $5000 fine, a criminal conviction, and a possible jail term. However, the LDP supports giving people the right to own firearms for “self-defence”, which I think is inherently dangerous. Whilst we don’t have the underclass of America, we still do have an underclass, and frankly I like being able to walk through dodgy neighbourhoods knowing that worst comes to the worst, I mostly likely won’t have a gun pointed in my face. Whilst it is still possible to get a gun, we are saved by the fact that it is bloody hard unless you know the right people and can pay a premium for it. Buying one down at the local K-Mart will lead to an incredible surge of people having guns “for the sake of it”, and people will end up being stupid with them. As it currently stands, the laws mean that any firearms owner must be very responsible with them, and the draconian laws mean that they are very unlikely to misuse them in any way.

So as it stands I am unsure. As with any party, there are pros and cons. I’m thinking they would do well in the Senate… I would far prefer them to have the balance of power rather than Family First. As for the lower house… well I met the Democrats candidate for Bennelong last weekend… maybe it’s time the Dems had another crack at the target?

Thoughts, Comments, Poems… the floor is yours :-)

I need a cause

Quite a lot of blogs out there have “purposes”, whatever that may be. Many are political, lambasting liberalism, gay rights, free dogs for the elderly, anything really that is a cause usually has a blog associated to it. Or there are sewing blogs, kniting blogs, blogs about running, jumping, swimming, horses, cats, everything.

I seem to have missed all of that… in fact, it’s very difficult to “categorise” my blog, and the few “blog directories” that have tried have put me under “self-improvement”.

Self-improvement?? Since when have I ever advocated that?

It’s quite ironic, because really I could have a blog devoted to many causes and hobbies…

The Political Blog
I could come from the angle that I’m a young (gay) man, bred a true Blue Liberal, and now losing the faith in both political parties and considering starting my own. I could post from my vantage point right here in Bennelong, the centrepiece for the upcoming election fight. I could even post photos of Shelton tearing up Maxine McKew pamphlets that somehow got used to line the bunny cage. Good Boy!!!!

The Gliding Blog
I’m a mad glider pilot, I believe getting high only happens at 8,000′. Who needs engines to fly fast? Photos, videos, cheerleader chants… I can have it all! Pictures of glider porn (Mmmm… the new LS-10 is sexy!) .. I got it all !

The Outrageously Gay Blog
Boys a-Plenty! Blonde, twinky, and half-naked. Posts about gay this, gay that. Support my rainbow flag, biatches, or I’ll post mean bitchy things about you!
Every day could be able some guy I was checking out, my newfound sexual position not mentioned in the Gay Karma Sutra. Plus, gossip gossip gossip !!!

The Homogenous Suburbanite Housewife
Life from the suburbs in Ryde, the new-age family of two men and a dog. Still monogamous after 3.5 years, marriage on the cards in the not-so-distant future. Fine wines, nice scotch, a Subaru, and a BBQ. If only we could afford the house we’re living in, it’d be a dream come true.

The Television Blog
What’s new in TV? What’s hip? Why are the broadcasters not pulling their weight. From the mouth of a broadcast engineer, what are the networks doing any why? What new technologies are out there? Bring on IPTV!

Excluding the last genre (which I dare not do due to my profession), I like to think my blog is a mix of all things. Should I concentrate on one genre? Maybe just screw it all, I’ll be a jack-of-all trades. Tell me now if you think there’s something I should blog about more often.

MEANWHILE, we are still lacking entries for Adam’s survey… whilst some people are doing it, we really need ways and motivations for people to pass it on. We’ve learnt that it’s a lot harder now he’s not an honours student… people just treat it likely another market research survey. We’re actually learning first-hand why nobody else in the country has done this kind of research. A) If AC Nielson or some other large research company rang you during dinner and you didn’t tell them to sod off, would you admit to them that you downloaded TV content, and be confident it’s anonymous? b) People just don’t offer their opinions willingly. I’m going to continue writing emails to people I know, asking them to pass it around. If you haven’t filled it out already please take the time to visit the site below.

My gawd I’m a duffer. When I posted the link to Adam’s survey, I misspelled the link! Thanks so much to Neil for pointing that out!

Thanks to all those who posted ideas on how to virally market the survey… some of them I can’t implement at this time because we had to apply to the NSW Government and state the Terms and Conditions of the competition, and unfortunately that means we can’t change them mid-stream :(

ANYWAY, Adam really needs your help in doing this survey! So far not nearly enough have completed it, and it does not take much out of your day to do it. It’d mean a hell of a lot to him (and me!)

The link is Zuccomedia.com.au, and feel free to enter the comp. We have the prizes sitting here in the safe, and we’re not eligible to enter, so it’s gotta go to someone!!

Click on the pic below to also go there :-)

We’re also going to start targetting companies, as a corporation (as a whole) has a whole mix of demographics, that we’re looking for. We’d really appreciate it if you might find time to circulate this survey amongst people at your workplace… more people the better!

The ideas we have for our next survey (in terms of marketing) are

  • Blog competition !!! This worked well for Microsoft Office’s “It’s Not Cheating” competition… basically you award a prize for the most creative blog mentioning the survey, and a few minor prizes for 2nd and 3rd place :)
  • Referral links… if you get 5 other people to do the survey, both you and the other people you get to complete the survey get an extra entry in the competition. I like that one, Neil :-) Thankyou!
  • Any other ideas? Floor’s to you…
  • Bring on the Virus

Wow, that’s a long time since I’ve posted something! Did you all miss me? I kinda missed blogging a bit.. but let me tell you what I’ve been up to :-)

Presenting, Zucco Media‘s website, which I have spent the best part of the last week designing, writing and implementing for Adam. For those who don’t know or haven’t read, he’s starting his own business in media research, and I’m his technical consultant / contractor / whipping boy. I charge very cheap rates… One bottle of Johnny Blue for design and integration, and one bottle of Johnny Black per month for the support contract. Keeps me very happy!

But enough about that! We need your help!

Some of you may remember Adam’s original poll that Adam did last year for his survey… well we need your help once more to do this survey! We got a good response last time, this time we need more! So we’ve sweetened the deal with a competition, consisting of a set of 8 Gold Class vouchers (yes if you win, you get 8 tickets), and 3 $50 Bunnings vouchers (you can guess whose influence that was!). Hence we need people to fill out the survey, and if you like, enter the competition :-)

That aside, we need some ideas of how to spread this virally. We have a small budget, so can’t afford traditional advertising or cold calling… free-to-cheap marketing is all we can do. And now that viral marketing is all the rage, we need ideas!

Question to my readers What was the most memorable viral marketing strategy you can think of? Leave your answers in the comments below.
Also, take a look over Adam’s site, and give me any thoughts that come to mind in terms of improving it. It’s slow beginnings, but I have big plans for it :-)

    Meanwhile, the survey link…

Please stand by whilst this writer mentally reboots.
