10 Questions

  • Do you promote your blog?
Not really. I forwarded my blog to PinkBoard, but that’s about it.
  • How often do you check hits?
About once every two weeks or so, using Google Analytics
  • Do you stick to one topic?
Not really… I think I’m well known for blogging about anything from sex, to religion and politics, to daily woes and even completely random shite.
  • Who knows that you have a blog?
Believe it or not, more people than I imagined! My own mother and father know of it and have read it (scary!)… in fact, reading a certain post on this blog caused my mother to leave me father.
  • How many blogs do you read?
I’ve got about 25 blogs on Google Reader, and I’ll read anyone who updates
  • Are you a fast reader?
Yes, quite so in fact. i’ve always been known as a speed reader
  • Do you customise your blog or do anything technical?
Yes, I’m quite the geek in this regard. I use a home-made script to automatically sychronise my LiveJournal account with VolaciousNet. I couldn’t find anything that did exactly what I wanted (particularly synchronising comments and threading them), so I wrote it myself in PHP and mySQL.
  • Do you blog anonymously?
I don’t know how anonymous I am… Google can’t pick up my full name, but if you are canny my full name is easily discernable through my blog.
  • To what extent do you censor yourself?
I try not to, but I have had to curtail what I write about my relationship because Adam specifically requested that I not post about troubles we are having, or more particularly troubles I am having with him.
  • The best thing about blogging?
As so many others have said, I have met so many “face-to-face” friends from my explots as a blogger. I still have good, close friends from my debut on LiveJournal almost 5 years ago. Even now, I’ve recently made more great friends…. Adam is constantly surprised how many people know me from my blog (at least originally). That, and it satisfies my geeky side by running my own server, building my own blog code, owning and controlling everything to do with my blog. It’s a geek thing :-)

Owowowowowow! That’ll teach me. I went off to the beach today to soak up some good Aussie sun in preparation for a cold English winter that I’ll be going to next week.

Overall, it’s been a lazy, lazy weekend. Friday was interesting… went to a birthday party in Newtown, and seemed to run into a lot of people that were either fellow bloggers or have read this blog and knew who I was! Adam thinks I must be an S-class celebrity at least, but I don’t think that’s the case. I have some work to do before I even get to Z-grade I think :-)

Saturday… spent all day sprawled out on the bean bag watching movies all day. I honestly don’t get enough days like that. Drew thinks bean bags are a fashion faux pas… bah! Adam went to sleep about 10pm, at which point I decided I was too awake to sleep, and went into town, to Stonewall in fact, and met up with my friends, Simon and his boyfriend Adam, or “North Shore Princess”. Gawd I feel old going into Stonewall these days. I swear half the clientele couldn’t have been over 16. Strangely enough, another person came up to me and said they read my blog! Good God! Meanwhile, I still got looked up and down by a few twinkies there, and hit on by a drag queen. Ahhh, good old Stonewall :-)

And today was more of the same, but spent with my stupidly good-looking, sweet yet single friend James. Went for a ride as pillon passenger on his bike down to Balmoral beach, and earnt myself the sunburn described earlier. I was hoping to go to Mardi Gras and the UK with a nice tan, butI can see the sunburn deciding to all peel off the day before.

Know any good remedies for sunburn?

    Exhausted

    It’s not a good sign that’s it’s already Tuesday and I’m exhausted.
Haven’t been sleeping well lately, many many thoughts on the mind.
Meanwhile, I’m somewhat excited by the prospect of going over to England on Sunday week. Adam’s not too keen…. I don’t think I’ve been away from him for a whole month before.

Maybe it will give me some time to have a bit of a think, a reconfiguration if you will. I’ve been pondering over many aspects of my life lately and where it’s headed. Maybe it’s a flaw, but I’ve always had a picture in my head of where I want to be, and if I figure out that things aren’t heading in the right direction, I get anxious.

    It’s 7pm, and I want to sleep.

I heard on Seven News tonight that PM Rudd intends to turn all the surplus pro-Howard WorkChoices pamphlets into toilet paper.

Pro or against WorkChoices, you have to admit the man has style!

What a few days it has been. I wish I had the time to post more often, but sometimes life doesn’t throw us that luxury! For the convenience, I’ll break it down into little bits:

    Quarter Century
I decided to dye my hair black the other day. Jet black. I’ve done it once before (see pic here), but now I’m moving into quarter-life-crisis stage, I needed to do a pre-emptive strike to make sure no grey hairs showed through!

My birthday itself was a great affair, starting of with a family lunch and ending up with a BBQ party with my extended (social) family! A great time was had by all as far as I know, and I did enjoy watching Drew’s dog Lucy trying to stand her own against our lovable brute Shelton.

Btw Mal, I’m honoured that you remembered how much of a size queen I am ! ’nuff ‘zed :-)

    Fair Day
Can you believe until this year I’d never been to a Mardi Gras Fair Day? How embarrassing! Adam and I packed into the car with sunscreen and labrador, and even Adam said it was even bigger this year than it was last year when he went (I had to work unfortunately!). An interesting day, I got cornered into doing a few surveys and looking at all the Pink regalia. The highlight of the day was entering Shelton into the dog contest for Best Pick-Up Dog, our stance being that Shelton has the uncanny knack of getting his lead tied around the legs of Twinks, ensuring they can’t escape. He didn’t win unfortunately, but he sure showed that he was a far superior than those yappy little toy dogs (fluffy footballs) that got through to the finals. Many a boy came up to us later and told us that our dog was definitely the cutest… I would never had said any different!

    Wet and cold
There’s been a bit of an interesting re-arrangement at work… one of my colleagues (I only have 2!) has been put in the position of my direct boss. What’s even better is that in 2 weeks time it will be most likely that I’ll be going to the UK for some training. I’m really happy about this… not only will I get the training I’ve been hoping for, but hey I’ve never been to the UK before! Granted it’s Southampton, but I will at least have a chance to visit “sunny England” and see some sights :-) If all goes well, it looks like I’ll be getting on a plane a few wee hours after getting home from Mardi Gras… ohhh sleep on the plane sounds good!

That’ll be it from me for now… if I get any more brainfarts in the new future, I’ll be sure to let y’all know!

I’ve been blogging for almost 5 years now. I first started in 2003, and this post marks my 600th entry. I’ve read a lot of other blogs, and have met some great friends, in fact out of the good friends that I still talk to, a significant portion are bloggers.

So I wondered the other day.. what makes a good blog? I haven’t really discovered what the secret recipie is yet… obviously, as we say in the television industry, Content is King. But what content makes something readable and keeps readers tuned in? This is what I’ve postulated… feel free to mention if I’ve missed any key ones….

  • Sex. It’s no secret that sex sells. It’s at the core of any type of populist marketing. Tasty pictures, whether tasteful or pseudo- porn, always catches the eye. Sordid tales of sexual encounters also rates highly, spare no allusions! Let’s face it,even if there’s nothing else that the gay community agrees on, sex will always bring them together! Personally, I am not a fan of sites that are mostly porn, but mostly because I can’t read them at work :-)
  • Religion and Politics I was going to class Sex, Religion and Politics all together, as these are the three forbidden dinner-table topics, however sex does deserve its own heading. You can avoid religion and politics as long as you feature hella sexy boys. However, these latter twin demons are always so controversial, it’s likely to spark a debate no matter what you say.
  • Original Ideas
  • I would say out of all the blog posts I read each day courtesy of Google Reader, only 25% of the new posts really say anything new. Even if it’s a common topic that’s being thrown up, I’ve noticed that I get attracted to people who offers forward a different take on it. Even if it’s completely whacky… sometimes the best reads are the wierdest!

  • Honesty
  • The best blogs speak from the heart. If the writer is passionate about something, chances are it will make a great post! There’s nothing worse than a blog where you know the writer is being fake, or trying deliberately to self-promote. There are several blogs on my list that lack the first three attributes mentioned, but I am enthralled by the way the writer’s character comes through in his or her dialogue.

  • Comprehension
  • I don’t think this can be stated enough… a good post can be really destroyed by writing like an eight-year-old. I think many people (including myself) would find it difficult to understand let alone respect the opinion of someone who appears barely educated. If one is blogging for a cause, believe me the best writers are the ones that get noticed and quoted!

  • Engage the Readers
  • Some people write only for themselves, and those that have a “conversation” with the reader tend to gather huge reader bases. Whether you write inflammatory posts or not, I find readers feel more valued if the writer replies to comments. Maybe it makes the writer seem more like a friend than a distant publisher? Sometimes comments from readers can be even more entertaining than the article itself!

  • Regularity
  • The most successful blogs I’ve found have regular content. Most likely readers will become bored, or moreso lose that “connection” with the writer if they don’t hear from him/her in a long time.

Well, those seven are for starters anyway. Although I’m terrible with many of those points (particularly the last one), those seven seem to be common factors in the blogs I read. So I’ll leave it there, and hand it over to you…

What do you think makes a good blog?

With all that has been going on in the past few weeks, it was about time that I was dealt a bit of a break. Last Thursday we had “Super Thursday” where a string of good events all came together and a bit of hope twinkled. One of the good things that happened was I received a letter from the boss offering a pay rise and a bonus, the latter of which I was not expecting at all. Whilst I still had to remain frugal, I decided I needed some retail therapy!

I’ve never had an MP3 player. Well, apart from my old Nokia phone which has about 64MB memory, and can hold about 12 songs. I’ve resisted for many years the iPod craze, as frankly who wants to be one of the sheep? So I hunted around for the best MP3 player I could get for my money, that could do video as well as look good. I hunted through Samsun, Creative, iRiver… frankly they were all a little disappointing. I knew that the new 3rd Generation iPod Nano’s were rather funky, but have always hated the “synergy” with iTunes that rakes in so much money for Apple whilst being so bloatware in nature it’s not funny.

However, the 8GB black iPod Nano won out. Price was comparable to the rest, and the super-sexy sleek form factor plus a really tiny but high-res screen… nothing else even came close. So, alas, I am now a part of the iPod Generation, and I love my new little toy :-)

I found my old IBM laptop to install iTunes on, and fired it up. Whilst I still hate iTunes, I love my nano :-) I’ve already gone on eBay and bought myself a cute little leather protector for it and a wireless FM transmitter with remote control for the car.

I’m a sucker, I really am, and I’ve even started to hunt around for decent podcasts to listen to whilst on the go.

Can anyone recommend to me some decent podcasts??
